Hawkesdown House School

27 Edge Street, London W8 7PN

Profile: Hawkesdown House is a pre-preparatory school in Kensington for boys aged 3 – 8. It was founded in 2001 and has gained quick popularity in the area. It combines a traditional British pre-preparatory education in a cosmopolitan setting, placing particular emphasis on personal development and pastoral care for the boys. The parent profile is probably a bit more diverse and down to earth than its main competitor Wetherby Pre-Prep. The 2009 inspection praises the schools caring environment:

Hawkesdown House School has an excellent ethos where pupils thrive. The school successfully meets its aim that all pupils are cared for and nurtured as individuals. Staff care greatly for pupils’ well being, working closely together to provide an outstanding quality of pastoral care. Health, safety, care and support have a very high priority in the school, a point appreciated by pupils and their parents. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent. They are exceptionally polite and well mannered, and show levels of personal development, substantially in excess of those expected of pupils of their age.

Most boys live in walking distance to the school and reflect the cosmopolitan neighbourhood of Kensington. A quarter of the boys are bilingual or have English as an additional language. There is a wide range of extracurricular activities, with all boys taking Chess and Judo in the final two years. Pupils can also take individual music lessons and study Mandarin after school. Academic standards are high, and many boys are reading fluently in Reception already, as a result of ample time dedicated to one-to-one reading with qualified staff.

A smaller number of boys are entered for 7+ exams (upon recommendation by the school), while most boys leave at 8+. Chepstow House, Caldecott, Ludgrove, Wetherby Prep and Sussex House are popular destinations, but you have several candidates moving on to Westminster Under, St Paul’s Junior and Latymer Prep every year as well. The full list detailing a wide range of schools is provided by the school.

Admissions: The main intake is at 3+ into the Nursery class, though some boys join at 4+. Parents are encouraged to visit the school a year to 15 months before entry. Boys can be registered via the application form or in person during the school visit. Having to compete with Wetherby as well as Fox Primary next door, occasional vacancies arise in other year groups as well.

Exit Results: As Hawkesdown House is a pure pre-preparatory school, all boys leave at the 7+/8+ stage, moving on to other preparatory schools in London, with some boys moving on to preparatory boarding schools.
