Horris Hill: renowned prep school to close

Horris Hill School, located in Newtown, Newbury, has confirmed it will shut its doors at the end of the academic year in July. The school, which serves pupils aged two to 13, is owned and run by parent company Forfar Education. The closure was communicated to parents just before the Easter holidays. A spokesman for Forfar Education said “academic operations will cease” at Horris Hill in a matter of months.

The school was founded on its present site in 1888 by A.H Evans, a master at Winchester College. Forfar Education said: “Following discussions between the two schools, Horris Hill is recommending that families consider continuing their education at Cheam School from the next academic year.

“The recommendation by Horris Hill that pupils move to Cheam School presents families with an option which would offer a supported pathway for their child’s learning journey within a shared culture of strong traditions and a focus on character and academic excellence.”

Horris Hill was a reputable prep school and a known feeder for top public schools such as Eton College. Other than Cheam School, you can find a wider list of alternative boarding prep schools here.
